Not Going It Alone

“A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.” ‭‭Ecclesiastes‬ ‭4:12‬ ‭NLT‬‬

The tv mini series The Hunt, with David Attenborough, captures the lives of predators and prey in pursuit of survival. Often prey succumb to the attack of predators when they wonder away from their fold or are found in isolation. The prey’s survival in many instances depends on ‘strength in numbers.’

For humans to thrive we often depend on social, emotional, vocational or even financial support. As the saying goes, ‘no man is an island.’ Trying to go it alone could be risky especially when the stakes are high or the environment presents danger.

Ultimately, there is no better friend than an infallible supreme God. Through prayer and a study of the Bible we can find strength to meet daily trials. Through God’s direction, we also find strength to meet the challenges of the day through positive relationships with others who may share similar interests, goals, and desires. However, having a good friend often means being a good friend—giving encouragement, positive feedback and constructive criticism, or being an advocate when others seek to tear down.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, help me to find strength in You! To lean on You daily and to seek to lift up others. Put a hedge around us. Protect us from the evil one and may our lives provide meaningful interdependence to meet the challenges of the day.
