A man who has friends must himself be friendly, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24 NKJV
A Word for Today
True friends are like a breath of fresh air. They allow us to take in and breathe out what’s on our hearts without having to overly filter or be afraid of judgment. Jesus often spoke in parables to the multitudes but had open conversation with close friends. Martha befriended Jesus and they became friends along with Mary and Lazarus. They were able to tell him just how they felt without reservation. When Lazarus died Jesus wept.
For humans to thrive we often depend on social, emotional, vocational or even financial support. Trying to go it alone could be risky especially when the stakes are high or the environment presents danger. Through God’s direction, we often find strength to meet the challenges of the day through positive relationships with others who may share similar interests, goals, and desires. Having a good friend often means being a good friend—giving encouragement, positive feedback and constructive criticism, or being an advocate when others seek to ridicule.
A Prayer for Today
Lord, help us to know You for ourselves and to be to others what You are to us. Help us to build up and not tear down. Thank you for the gift of friendship and for placing others in our lives who are a blessing.
