’If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? Matt 7:11
Are you evil?
I have a friend that used to refer to herself as ‘evil M.’ She is so honest. How many of us are willing to admit to being ‘evil?’ But the question in this text might not be so focused on whether we are evil or not, but rather, are we willing to ask for good gifts?
So I’m desirous of owning a ‘3 series,’ one day. Not a ‘5’ or a ‘7.’ Just a ‘3’ would be fine. Wouldn’t that be a good gift? I would also like a new house where I don’t have to fix anything, at least for a while. I’m asking now because I can see it in my future. God knows how to give good gifts….Nevertheless, I’m not sure if the good gifts referred to in the text include my material wants. I’m hoping they do, but in the previous chapter of Matthew, Jesus says he knows our needs (6:8). So, I may not need a ‘3’ but…it would be a good gift to receive.
What else are we asking for today? Could it be something really valuable? Like wisdom. Good health. A better relationship. A job. Success in our studies. He knows how to give good gifts. So evil ones, let’s just ask. Who knows what he’ll give?
Prayer for today:
Lord you know my needs and my wants. Grant me the wisdom to accept what you give knowing that You know best.
